Rooted in tradition, driven by innovation: Our journey through time
Anthony Mongiello continues his family’s tradition of innovation in the Italian food industry in the United States. In 1925, his grandfather, Lorenzo Mongiello, established a specialty canning company for ricotta cheese. Lorenzo, a tinsmith who immigrated from Italy to Brooklyn, NY, designed the pioneering metal tapered ricotta cans with venting holes and built the machinery to produce them.
Lorenzo’s son, Angelo Mongiello, followed in his father’s footsteps of industrial creativity. Observing how cheesemakers had to mold mozzarella by hand in extremely hot water, he invented the first patented automated mozzarella cheese-making machine in U.S. history. Angelo went on to earn over a dozen additional patents for industry-related items and custom-built equipment that Formaggio still uses today.
Anthony Mongiello accompanied his father, Angelo, to a product pitch meeting at Polly-O dairy. During this meeting, he witnessed his father introduce the universally popular and industry-changing String Cheese Stick, now found in 43% of American homes*. This experience inspired Anthony to pursue his own path of product innovation, continuing the family tradition of food industry breakthroughs. Anthony’s own revolutionary invention, the iconic Stuffed Crust Pizza, has solidified the Mongiello name as synonymous with Italian cheese.
With tireless dedication and imagination, the possibilities for specialty cheese products are endless and ever-expanding. The Fresh Mozzarella cheese category has grown from just 5 items to 75, creating an entire specialty cheese section in grocery stores.
